I am a woman. I am a practicing attorney. I am the only woman in my office over the age of 35 who doesn’t color her hair. I have some gray, but not a lot yet, and I never seriously considered coloring my hair until this job. I don’t want to: it’s expensive and a pain in the ass to keep up. About a year ago, I was in court, and a female attorney walked in with curly, bobbed, naturally gray hair, and her mere act of publicly displaying her natural hair color seemed not just unusual but defiant. Meanwhile many men in my office and in the courts have gray hair, and I doubt anyone thinks twice about it.

What a beautiful photoset of women. Women we don’t often see portrayed in the media, but these are, indeed, women — just as grey-haired men are men.

United Nations officials described the killing of sleeping children as a disgrace to the world and accused Israel of a serious violation of international law after a school in Gaza being used to shelter Palestinian families was shelled on Wednesday.

Horrifying…But we should mention that the UN also condemned Hamas (that’s Hamas, not Gaza in general) for hiding/launching their missiles from public places like schools and hospitals. And then told their citizens to remain in their homes when the Israeli ones came roaring back. Why? Because it helps their cause by making Israel look like the only villain. It’s also worth mentioning that the Hamas group, though powerful in Gaza, is not every single Gazan. So pretty much, it’s like the leaders are willfully offering their people up as target practice because they know the world is watching and vilifying Israel for their deaths. Is Israel innocent then? No, not at all. That’s an equally complicated issue. Whatever you believe, both sides seem to be very, very good at one thing in this war: killing innocents.

Caroline sent me this in my personal blog, and I just had to share it with all you potterheads:

… If you’re a Harry Potter fan, this is wonderful news. [The study] provides some experimental backing for J.K. Rowling’s opinion that, “The Potter books in general are a prolonged argument for tolerance, a prolonged plea for an end to bigotry.”

More importantly, it shows that conveying messages of tolerance through literature actually works. Potter’s journey of self-discovery, then, might some day be immortalized in projects that aim to teach tolerance to young children.
